Il quadro, dell’artista italiana Giuliana Amorosi, ha in origine un titolo anglofono: “Self-Portrait with green hair”. Pittrice emergente contemporanea, con in lei tutti i tratti del XXI Secolo, i suo i dipinti sono concentrati sul tema della donna.

Tecnica acrilica su tela, di 70×50 cm, il quadro è stato dipinto nel 2016 ed è uno dei suoi lavori principali. Una sorta di sentimento speciale ci lega a questo autoritratto, unico. La figura della donna è rappresentata in stile moderno, con elementi dell’arte italiana contemporanea. Fino al XX Secolo, l’arte della penisola era incentrata sui temi della natura, della religione, della politica. Con il modernismo, il focus principale si spostò sulle persone e sul miglioramento personale. La donna nel ritratto riflette l’età moderna, con la cuffia e il telefono nelle sue mani. Telefono usato per realizzare il selfie di fronte allo specchio.

I colori ci dicono molto. C’è un buon bilanciamento tra chiari e scuri, che rendono il risultato molto neutro. Con una tonalità né vibrante, né piatta. A dare una sensazione “cool” e pacifica.

This gives the artwork a cool and peaceful vibe. It shows the mood of the artists in the self-portrait. As the artist’s work is mainly about human emotions, this aspect has been perfectly covered in this painting. The main focus is the woman and this is because of the strong contrast used by the artist. The woman in the painting is in her zone, jamming to the music being played in the headphones while loving her new hair.
The use of shapes is intelligent in this artwork. When seen for the first time, I thought it to be an abstract painting but when observed properly, there is enough symmetry in this painting. The shapes used in this painting are regular, for example, the face structure of the woman is sharp and pretty. Similarly, the phone and the background structure is also a rectangular shape. The features in the painting are prominent all because of the shapes. Due to this smart use, it becomes obvious what the structures are and stops the viewers to think of it as a piece of abstract art.
I felt like there is a strong emotion attached to this artwork; Painting is considered as silent poetry, so there is always an emotion. Being contemporary artwork, things are according to our age. Hundred years ago, women were not independent and they lacked major rights. There were a lot of restrictions for them and the biggest one was they had no power over their own body. They could not decide things for themselves and always had to get the approval of others. But now, things have changed. Women can wear whatever they want or do whatever they like. The green hair might look odd at first but comparing it with the women of the past, it represents a symbol of empowerment. Coloring your hair was not a common thing to do and imagine coloring your hair green in the 1900s. The painting shows how the woman has dyed her hair green without any care and she’s in her zone of self-loving. Hence, the emotion attached to this artwork is strong, self-love, and empowerment which has been beautifully painted by the artist. The idea behind the painting is creative and right on point. It is something a lot of women of today can relate to and still, there are women who will feel envious about the painting. The green hair is the highlight of the main subject which is doing its job to make the woman feel special about herself. People might say that it is just hair but the artist wants the views to focus on it. The evidence is in the name of the artwork.
The background does not much information on this as the only structure that appears to be there is a door. The foreground is too strong for the background and I felt like there could be a little improvement in this regard.

Conclusion:
It looks like the art style has been inspired by contemporary artists which keeping the originality factor in it. The most original thing about this artwork is its central subject; the woman in this. All the elements of the artwork complement the main subject of the painting. So, whatever the angle may be, everything will come back to the woman in the portrait. The start and end of the cycle in the painting is the woman. Hence, it is a strongly composed artwork whose strength lies in the main subject.
